Road Trip Memories

I glance at you now and then

as we travel up the mountain,

through the clouds.

“Drive into the sky on Skyline Drive."

I wish out loud

that we might do this again next year,

but you don’t hear- just ask,

“Can we stop?”

“Yeah” and we stop

at the Big Run Overlook and look up

at Rocky Top Ridge as we stretch our legs.

This picture begs to be taken

but I’ve forgotten my camera.

“That’s okay,” you say and I hear you

and laugh.

“I don’t think I developed last year’s

Massanutten and Stony Man Mountain

film.” And you smile and say,

“I remember”

and I remember too then the fog sets in

obscuring my view as it starts to rain.

“We’ll be back again soon I’m sure,”

you smile and I’m sure too,

but I’d still like a picture.
